Homeschool Methodologies
Return to Home Room
Before you read through these, please know that you do not hve to choose one and stick
with it.  You must find what works for your child in terms of currriculum and style and
eventually your methodology will become apparent.  And sometimes you might find your
approach contains multiple methodologies!  It's all part of the learning and growing
process with homeschooling.
Charlotte Mason Method - Charlotte Mason was a 19th centure British educator who
positiviely influenced many families to employ her early education and chile training methods
in their own homes.  Her motto was "Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life."  Her
focuses were short lesson periods, using living books, doing narration, and having free
afternoons for children to pursue their own interests.  You can see my cliff notes on
Charlotte Mason by clicking

Classical Education Method - Dorothy Sayers well-known essay "The Lost Tools of
Learning" is the basis of the new classical Christian education movement.  Classical learning
follows a particular pattern of three main components called the Trivium.  The three
components are grammar (grades 1-6), dialectic (grades 7-9), and rhetoric (grades 10-12).
The student is not so much taught what to think, but how to think.  You can read more

Eclectic Homeschooling Method - An eclectic homeschooler is one who looks at the
different approaches and methods of homeschoolnig and takes from each forming his own
unique philosophy.  In the beginning, it is not unusual that first-time homeschoolers opt for
an out-of-the-box curriculum, like Calvert or Abeka.  However, most later end up creating
a unique curriculum for their children by combining multiple philosophies with selected
curriculum by different suppliers.  Here is another website to learn more:

Unit Studies Approach - The Unit Studies approach integrades all school subjects
together into one theme or topic.  You can learn more at
www.easyfunschool.com.

Unschooling - Unschooling is a philosophy of child-led learning where parents allow their
children to be responsible for their own learning.  The parents follow the lead of the child to
enable the child to learn through everyday life.  You can read more about unschooling at
www.unschooling.org.
You can read more about these methodologies and others at About Homeschooling.
