Of People 7th grade - This book contains interesting stories and poems with an emphasis
on character. Most of which are by well-known writers and poets, such as Victor Hugo
and Louisa May Alcott. The selections deal with seasons, holidays, family life, great men
and women, young people who have accepted a challenge, and legendary heros. Some
selections are excerpts of longer works, such as A Christmas Carol, Don Quixote,
Robinson Crusoe, and Pilgrim's Progress. Also included are comprehension questions,
vocabulary, reading speed tests, and a bit about the authors.
Of Places 8th grade - Pretty much same as above, with famous authors including Robert
Frost and Washington Irving. Some selections are excerpts from The Jungle Book, Up
From Slavery, and Ben Hur. Again, included are comprehension questions, vocabulary,
reading speed tests, and a bit about the authors. In addition, the book emphasies setting
and provides many models for student compositions in the Write-About-It section.
Pros: There is definitely a lot of quality reading here. If your goal is simply an exposed
to quality reading, then this is a great book. And the reading speed tests are helpful in
determining your child's speed in preparing for testing later.
Cons: When studying literature, I like to see whole books being read as opposed to
excerpts. In addition to comp questions and vocabulary, there should be a literary
analysis of characters, plot, conflict/resolution, setting, tone, imagery, etc. That's lacking
here. In addition to this, some selections have been edited, some words either changed or
omitted, to ensure Christian appropriateness. While this may be admirable to some, I
believe any literature worth studying should be done so in its original form.
