We are believers in NOT using a separate grammar curriculum, but rather letting kids
learn proper grammar from their speaking and writing.  We use Excellence in Writing
which has a strong emphasis on grammar.  However, that being said, this is the only
grammar curriculum that we would recommend.

Since SAT-type tests require editing to remedy grammar mistakes, this is an idea way to
help children learn their grammar as well as prepare them for the type of grammar testing
they'll be doing later.  That's why we like this program so much.

While we used the one for 6th + grade, the previous grades are just as good, providing
grade-appropriate reading and writing material.

These 36-weekly lessons help students master grade-level skills in language mechanics.
Instead of practicing skills in a random, decontextualized manner, DPE incorporates
language skills in paragraphs that represent the types of texts that students will encounter
across the curriculum.   High interest texts are included for editing, such as the history of
chewing gum, scurvy, All Creatures Great and Small, John Colter, terminal velocity, etc.
Also included are cheat sheets for proofreading marks, editing checklists, and a language
handbook which includes the basic rules for writing and editing  - which is a big plus!

Children are provided with 4 paragraphs of the same subject matter to edit over 4 days.
The fifth day they are provided with a writing prompt based upon that week's subject
matter.  For example, during week one, they edit 4 paragraphs on the history of chewing
gum; then on the 5th day, they are asked to write 1-2 pages on the history of gum.

Pros:    Children will definitely learn their grammar skills better this way than with
traditional grammar texts (see review on Abeka and Bob Jones English) as well as score
higher on their achievement tests using this product.  A big plus is the high-interest
consistency by maintaining the same subject throughout the week AND the Language
Handebook provided.

Cons:  It's a bit pricey as compared to some of its competitors.  However, I believe it's
well worth the cost difference because of the
Pros.
