This is a wonderful program to help children learn the sources of hundreds of vocabulary words with this multi-year program, covering grades 7-12.
Unlike programs that rely on rote memorization, this program incorporates a variety of methods to teach children the skills they need to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words while also expanding site vocabulary.
In Vol I, for example, there are 20 Unit lessons. Each lesson usually contains 10-13 vocabulary words to study and learn, each giving the Latin or Greek etymology, part of speech, definition, and sample sentence. The exercises to reinforce the learning include sentences that must be completed in a way that shows students understand the meaning of the italicized vocabulary word, fill-in-the-blank sentences with the proper vocabulary word, choosing the best set of vocabulary words that best complete the sentences provided, sentence completion based upon inferring vocabulary word meaning as used in sentences, and filling in the blank with the correct vocabulary word in paragraphs and answering the questions about those paragraphs.
As an added benefit, my daughter is making her own alphabetized Latin and Greek dictionary as she proceeds through this 6-year program. If you'd like, you can click here to print out these forms that she used to create her dictionary. Page 1 and CoverPage 2
Pros:This is a great way to learn word etymology. Each unit lesson can be done in 3-4 days per week.
Cons:According to my daughter, vocabulary words are easier remembered if Latin is studied first and then learning the derivatives vs. learning the derivatives first and then the Latin.
